Really Important but Unknown

80% of Americans think the 10 commandments should be displayed on public and government property.

Only 40% can name more than four.

How many can you think of without looking them up?

  1. Hmmm...I may not have them in order, but here goes:

    1. Thou shall have no other Gods before me.
    2. Thou shall not make and worship graven images.
    3. Honor thy mother and father.
    4. Thou shall not commit adultery.
    5. Thou shall not murder.
    6. Thou shall not bear false witness.
    7. Thou shall not steal.
    8. Thou shall not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his posessions.
    9. Keep the Sabbath holy.
    10. Do not take the Lord's name in vain.

Not too bad, if these are correct.

  2. Very good D'Ma. You are NOT the average American, lol.

Interestingly, there are different ways to break down the commandments into numbers. The text doesn't assign numbers to any of them.

Traditional Jewish numbering makes "You shall have no other gods" and "You shall not make and worship graven images" into two commandments, while keeping "coveting wife" and "coveting possessions" together as one.

Roman Catholic does just the opposite.
